Dr. Robert Grayson explains why a woman might feel cheated if she was unable to have a vaginal delivery. Dr. Grayson is an experienced physician in high-risk pregnancy situations and on staff at Banner Desert Medical Center in Mesa, Arizona.
Dr. Grayson:
I think we always wonder. I think no matter what process you go through you always wonder about what your options were and what it would have been like to go through that. I think it’s the same kind of idea that people go through when they talk about going through natural labor or having an epidural for their pain management during labor. It depends on what your goals are.
If your goal is to have a healthy infant, and that’s your only goal, mom is healthy; baby is healthy, I don’t think you get a lot of the feeling of being cheated. I think you are rewarded by the birth; you’re rewarded by welcoming your child into the world.
If you are there for an experience in addition to that, and some people are, you know, you want to run a marathon and to have a baby, then labor becomes an important part and not being able to experience what the labor process is like may leave people wondering. I think it’s the rare individual that feel cheated by not having that because most people are into their pregnancy because of a desire for a child.
