Premature Son: Why Was He Transferred To Banner Thunderbird?

Catrina explains why her son was transferred to Banner Thunderbird Medical Center after he was born prematurely and shares how the staff responded to the emergency situation.

Catrina:
My name is Catrina. My son Tanner was born five weeks premature and I wanted to share my story with you.

Tanner was born at a different facility that didn’t provide neonatal care and they found that he needed to be medevaced to Banner Thunderbird where they provided him the neonatal care that he needed.

Tanner was five weeks premature and so, he was needing some special care at Banner Thunderbird NICU and I was recovering at a different location from a C-section and because we were separated and I wasn’t able to join him right away I, as a mom, had to have a lot of trust and know that my premature baby was being well taken care of by the nurses and the staff at Banner Thunderbird Hospital.

The nurses and the staff allowed me to call. They didn’t make me ever feel like I was bothering them or I was bugging them in anyway. They were always eager to fill me in on his progress. They weren’t really scared to let me know if there were any fallbacks’ there’s always going to be a fallback when you have a preemie. They were very open and very truthful with me. They didn’t give me any false expectations. They were very informative.

I called every shift change. They knew who I was. They were very personable. They called Tanner the ‘cute baby’. He was one of the biggest preemies that they had ever seen. He was six pounds, three ounces, so for a preemie that’s pretty big.

The nurses and the staff just always made me feel extremely comfortable even though it was a really hard situation to be in when you are so worried about the life of your child. So, I mean they were really good to me. They were really good to me and my husband that was there at Tanner side and so it was very hard for us to be in two different locations trying to figure out what was going on and they were always willing to talk to us and communicate us to how Tanner was doing.

Great job, Catrina! I know your words mean a lot to the nurses there, and others who might need to make a decision about getting care at Thunderbird. Thanks for sharing!!!
