Cataracts can cause major vision issues. Cataracts are defined as a blurring of the lens of the eye, which results in decreased vision and contrast color sensitivity. The lens is important in vision because it focuses rays of light onto the retina, which is located at the back of the eye.

You might have a cataract if your vision worsens over time. Some specific issues can include cloudy vision and problems with seeing light.

When you first get a cataract, there might be no noticeable symptoms since it’s a gradual process. This is why it’s important to get consistent eye exams.

Causes of cataracts include a clumping of protein in the lens which is caused by aging, smoking, diabetes and infection.

Treatment options include using specific eyeglasses or magnifying lenses, as well as changing lighting. For worse cases, surgery is necessary.
