Dr. Weeks shares if it is possible for a doctor to remove a brain tumor through a patient's nose.

Dr. Weeks:
The ability to remove brain tumors through the nose is something that’s really fascinating and it’s a new revolutionary technology in our specialty. We are actually able to remove brain tumors now through the nose without making a skin incision on a patient’s body.

It’s hard to imagine that one can remove a growth that’s growing at the base of the brain or the skull through the nose, but because of our endoscopes and the technologies that have been developed in our field, we are actually able to remove tumors and large tumors through the nose without any skin incisions.

That’s done by our ability to navigate through the nose with three-dimensional telescopes, using computer navigation and computer technology to map the brain and the skull base, which allows us to be guided through the nose in a safe manner.

If you think about where the nose is relative to the brain, there’s a lot of very important structures and a lot of high-priced real estate that travels in that area. However, with these technologies and with brain mapping, we are able to navigate those territories very, very safely and remove large tumors, like pituitary tumors, through the nose.
