When Did You Walk After Your Knee Replacement?

Rate This

Bonnie recalls the moments right before surgery and taking her first steps just hours after her knee was replaced.

Bonnie:
What I remember of my knee replacement surgery, the actual procedure, being wheeled into the operating room; transferred onto the operating table. Dr. Tsao came and said hello and Heather came in and said hello. They took x-rays of my knee and I had requested a steroid injection in my other knee and she had sent off for that medication.

And then I remember waking up and going back to my room and a few hours after being out of the OR two lovely men came in – big men, and they put a belt around me and they said, “Bonnie, we’re going to go for a walk,” and so I felt very secure with them because they put a belt around your waist and they take really good care of you as you’re walking out and about and they said, “We’ll go as far as you want to go. You tell us when you want to go back,” and so we walked about a quarter of the way around the nurse station and I said, “I would like to go back,” and so we turned around and went back. Big step.

The first time I heard that I was going to be up walking within just a few hours of getting out of the surgical room I thought there is no way, but you have such great support with them walking with you and knowing that you don’t have to walk completely around the circle helped. So you just do what you can do and they will accept that.

As a physical therapist this is such great information to share with people that are considering surgery! Some people are not informed on the what to expect after surgery. If you have questions, ask or doctor or ask if you can speak with someone who recently had the surgery to get their point of view.
