Myth #1: Bipolar disorder is rare

According to WedbMD, this is not true of bipolar disorder.

The mental illness affects approximately 5.7 million American adults per year, as reported by the National Institute of Mental Health.

This number equates to approximately 2.6 percent people 18 or older of the U.S population.

We have come a long way from early beliefs that mental illness was a result of supernatural phenomena, and resorting to brutal treatments.

However, to this day, we sometimes fall into negative attitudes and misconceptions about mental illnesses that can make it harder for people to reach out for help. One such example is bipolar disorder.
