Dr. Shaw explains why some women are in need of a breast lift.

Dr. Shaw:
Oftentimes after pregnancy the breast will gravitate lower and when you look at a breast that’s like that the nipple will become, be lower than the inframammary fold, which is at the ‘x’ here. And the other issue is at the distance from the nipple down to that fold is too long and the distance going around the breast is too long. So what we want to achieve is a breast that has a higher nipple-areola complex, which you can see is now above the inframammary fold, the distance from the areola to the inframammary fold is much shorter, and the distance around the breast is shorter.

So how do we get from here to here? What happens is, a pattern is drawn in surgery on the patient that almost looks like a keyhole and looks like this, the old areola is here, we actually can make that smaller and we make that the size we want like that. The areola size here corresponds to this circle when it closes. So what happens is, the tissue within this area is removed and the breast tissue is mobilized, at no time is the nipple removed from the breast itself.

So, once things are mobilized, the nipple with the breast tissue in the areola that’s now smaller is moved upwards into this area. So, this point will come to this point with a nipple in it and that will look like with that point there. This line comes together like that and then, all of the bottom components come together giving you a line like that.

So you do end up with an incision, or a scar here, one down the front in one of the crease, which would be here, one along the front and then one along the crease, but that’s the only way to create the, correct their problems with the sagging breast to a more anatomic breast and oftentimes, we’ll add an implant if the person wants to be larger, so there’s a breast lift with an augmentation.
