Dr. John DeBarros explains if the recovery from adjustable gastric band surgery is considered painful. Dr. DeBarros is devoted to a comprehensive surgical weight loss management program that emphasizes caring as part of the journey to restored health at Banner Estrella Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

Dr. DeBarros:
Most patients in LAP-BAND® surgery do experience some pain and most of the pain isn’t really pain, most people describe it as soreness and typically it is at the port side, as I described.

Now with the two different bands of course one device, the REALIZE® Band states that they have a lot less issues with soreness at the port side; the Allergan Band also and it’s also, and its also surgical technique of how you put it in as well that sort of goes into this.

But in terms of LAP-BAND®, I have had a LAP-BAND® myself and I can tell you that I had my LAP-BAND® done on a Saturday. I went home on Sunday and the only reason I stayed overnight in the hospital is because I have small children and they are just a bit much for the same day surgery. So I decided to sleep overnight. I went home the next day and actually I didn’t even go home; I went directly to the park with my two children who were at the time 4 and 7 and put them on the swings and we played the entire day in the park.

Then I went home and went to bed. The next day was Memorial Day and I actually started rearranging my wife’s kitchen and she has me go to work on Tuesday. So therefore, that’s why I went to work on Tuesday. I experienced very minimal pain. I had approximately I took two doses of pain medication in the entire week and never took another dose.

So the pain, and everybody’s pain is subjective, this is just my personal story, but most patients relate that they have some soreness or discomfort at the incision sites, typically it’s about four to five days, top seven days after surgery. Most patients relate zero pain after a week.
