Barbara recalls how she handled the loss of her daughter to asthma.

Barbara:
Well, at first you are angry. You are extremely angry, and what I did was probably what most people would do, is I went to the hospital. I got all the records and everything. I took them to the doctors. I had everybody look over everything.

There was a situation, actually, where we were there at the hospital, and I had experienced a lot of ICU hospitalizations, and this one was very different. They didn’t seem, it didn’t come across like this was going to be a life and death issue, the way the nurses were acting.

There was a hospital doctor that was taking care of her at the time. He even had a very casualness about him, and I remember her laying there and I remember, I have to tell you this first if this is okay, I remember her laying in the bed, and my husband and I looked at her, and we could see all these red blotches coming.

And the doctor came in, and I said to the doctor, “We are seeing these red blotches. What is this?” And he just very casually said, “Oh, well, we sometimes see this in sepsis, and I am going to go home, and I will see you in the morning.”

Well, I didn’t know anything about that, so anyway, every ICU is a little different. This particular one, when they did their shift change, the parents can’t be there. You have to go out to the waiting room.

It happened to be right around World Series time. So it was real crowded, and my husband and I, for us it would have been about an 8-minute ride to the hospital, and we had been there all day and went home to get a bite. He had to check some things for work, and they should never have let us leave. But we left, and I remember we weren’t even home an hour and a half, and I got a call that we really needed to come back.

We dropped everything, rushed back, got up there, and then they wouldn’t let us go in, and then finally someone came and said that our daughter had passed away. We were devastated, just devastated, and like I said, angry. And that’s where, why I started following up with her doctors and everything, and I even, to be honest, I even sought out an attorney.

We didn’t have a claim as far as anything wrong being done because there is no way she could have survived this, but us not being there and them not telling us the seriousness of it, we probably could have done something. But I talked to my husband, and I talked to other people, and they want to make you out the bad guys, and they would have taken her, the other attorneys would have taken her and done something, and we realized that there was just nothing that they could have done to make the situation better.
