Will Glucosamine Help A Woman Feel Better After ACL Surgery?

Dr. Johnson explains if glucosamine can help a woman feel better after undergoing anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery.

Glucosamine chondroitin sulfate are supplements that are commonly talked about and written about with respect to the preservation of the articular cartilage in your knee, and the jury is out if that’s true if it helps or not. What I tell patients is that if they want to take it, the glucosamine chondroitin sulfate, and spend the money to do that, at least from our standpoint, we have not found any reason not to take it.

On the other side of the coin, if the patient says to me, “Dr. Johnson, is there definitive proof that this is going to help me?” We don’t have that proof yet.

Dr. Darren L. Johnson, M.D., received his medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine. He completed his residency at the University of Southern California School of Medicine, Los Angeles and his fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Dr. Johnson is currently Professor and Chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery and Director of Sports Medicine at the University of Kentucky. His clinical interests include arthroscopy, knee and shoulder reconstruction and the double-bundle procedure for ACL repair.
