Denise explains why she was apprehensive about exploring alternative methods of treatment for ankylosing spondylitis.

Denise:
I was very reluctant to pursue any alternative medical treatments of any kind for this autoimmune disorder because I grew up in a science family. Half my family are scientists; the other half work in the medical community. We knew that there was no such thing as alternative. Homeopathy–that’s ridiculous. That can’t possibly work well. What is this–naturopath? Herbs? They can’t be any good. I mean, we were totally against anything like that in the family.

So I was, even though the Mayo Clinic had told me they couldn’t do anything for me, even though I was in excruciating pain and couldn’t walk, I still resisted even thinking about doing anything like that until my husband said, “Look, that’s enough. You really have to take care of this. You can’t keep doing what you are doing. You can’t live life like this anymore.”

So at that point, I started seeking out anybody I knew who had tried something different. At the time, my son was attending a school where there were a lot of kids with attention deficit disorder, and I knew that this–the autoimmune and attention deficit were somewhat similar and there’s something going wrong in the system. So I asked the principal, “Who would you recommend? I have this problem. I need to go check out these possibilities, but who would you recommend?”

And the name that came up right away was Dr. Alan Ketover who is here in the Phoenix Valley. He is both an M.D. and a homeopath, and I thought, “Well, okay, I am getting the best of both worlds. I mean, the guy’s got some science. It’s not going to be hokie pokie; you know? We’re just going, we’re going to have a little, tiny step.”

And actually what it turned out to be is, he took one look at me and said, “You’re in trouble and you are off milk. From this point on you’re off milk.” And I began to realize at that point the only person that could take care of me was me, and if I didn’t get myself as educated as I could possibly be about what was happening with my body and what I needed to do, I wasn’t going to get the kind of care I needed.

At that point, armed with that kind of information, understanding that I have a sensitivity, I threw myself into the Ketover’s program to the point that for a year I ate nothing but something called UltraClear® –no food. He was convinced that my immune system was so devastated that it needed a year to rebuild itself.

It was the most miserable year of my life. I was sick a lot. I detoxed a lot, but at the end of the year I could walk. I actually joined yoga classes and began to practice yoga. For my 50th birthday I conquered handstands in my yoga class. That is something that I could not have imagined doing back there in the Mayo Clinic sitting in the wheelchair waiting for the doctor to see me. So, it’s been well worth my while to take the time to educate myself on what it was that was happening to me and what I needed to do.
