Allergy and Asthma Truths Revealed by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America

When am I most at risk for allergies and asthma? Is my beloved cat or dog really making my asthma or allergies worse? With nearly 45 million Americans suffering from allergies and over 10 million with allergic asthma, these are questions many may be asking themselves. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) is here to set the record straight.

1. There is a cure for asthma and allergies.

While there is no cure for asthma and allergies, there are steps you can take to reduce allergy and asthma triggers. Examples include spring cleaning to reduce dust, pollen and other allergens in your home and speaking with your doctor about seasonal medication.

2. I only need to be worried about allergy and asthma triggers outdoors.

FICTION

You may believe allergens only exist outdoors; however, they can become permanent house guests. Take precautions to keep allergens outside by closing windows and doors, which can let pollen and other allergens inside, and purifying the air you breathe with an air purifier containing a True HEPA filter.

3. Allergies and allergic asthma can occur anytime of the year.

FACT

Allergies and allergic asthma don’t just occur when flowers start blooming, but can happen in all four seasons. Air particles, such as mold spores, pet dander and dust can cause year-round symptoms.

4. If I own a cat or a dog and have asthma or allergies, there is nothing I can do to help control dander in my house.

FICTION

You may still be able to have Milo or Otis in your home, even if you suffer from asthma or allergies. Pet dander can be an allergy and asthma trigger, but it can also be controlled. For example, use an air purifier with a True HEPA filter, which safely removes 99.97 percent of allergens, including pet dander.
