Alcoholism Recovery: How Important Is Communication To Staying Sober?

Gail explains the importance of good communication when trying to stay sober.

Gail:
When we drink and we use drugs your head and your heart is like a chimney and over the course of time that chimney gets clogged.

And so your heart and your head don’t communicate and when you stop drinking or using drugs and you start feeling better and start getting to know who you are and start understanding where you fell and how you got there, then that chimney clears away and then that connection gets, you get reconnected and your brain makes decisions on what your heart says.

Your brain doesn’t make decisions on survival mode anymore, because I believe that when we drink we make really bad choices, and that’s because we are running on our will and we don’t think about the consequences and who we hurt.

And so I have learned that as long as I keep that communication clear and I reach my hand out to help other alcoholics that they help me stay sober.

Just picking up the phone and talking to another alcoholic is different than picking up the phone and talking to my mother-in-law or a pastor or something like that, because they know, if they know me they know what I was like, what happened and what it’s like for me today and just by picking up the phone and talking to somebody else about it.
