Gail shares why she thinks she became an alcoholic.
Gail:
For me it was genetics. Great grandfather: alcoholic. Grandfather: alcoholic. Father: alcoholic. Brother: alcoholic.
You know it’s, I am allergic to alcohol and I can’t drink and if I lie to myself about that then I’ll pick up a drink and get drunk. I have been sober long enough today now the smell of alcohol or beer makes me gag.
It’s not like that for everybody. Some people have different triggers, like walking into a restaurant that they used to go to.
When I got sober my girlfriend told me, “Gail you need to change your playmates and your playpen, because what got you drunk and then what got you here obviously wasn’t working for you, and the people that you surround yourself with are the people who you are going to be.”
If you surround yourself with other alcoholics that go through life on a day-to-day basis they could help you get through that.
They can help you get through all those fears and resentments and anger. For me, mine is anger, anger turns to fear, fear turns to resentment and resentment turns to picking up a drink.

Part of my onset of alcoholism was genetic to be sure. But from the time I was very young, I felt out of place in the world. I couldn't face life on life's terms. Alcohol made me feel I belonged and eased my nerves at first. Then I needed it both emotionally and physically as time went on., It really doesn't matter because now that I know I'm alcoholic, it only matters what I do about it.
