HIV Diagnosis: How Did Your Kids React?

Darkina recalls how her son and daughter reacted to her HIV diagnosis.

Darkina:
I have an 18-year-old daughter, 20-year-old son. I didn’t know when I was going to actually tell them, which I know I had to tell them before I told the rest of my family. I always sat down and talked to my children about sex but I never talked them anything about HIV so they just knew the school version, they knew the basics and that was it. That was all.

They were very shocked. My son was very, I mean they stayed on, sat on the phone and they were quiet; for periods of time they were quiet – no understanding or anything. I did advise them to get educated, quickly get educated on it; take this disease very, very seriously.

Probably a month later after them reading and learning about it and my positive attitude and my education on it, it’s really nothing to my children; it’s absolutely nothing to my children. They don’t worry about it. They don’t treat me different. I have only actually had one experience where I was treated kind of different since I have been HIV positive.
